Last week, I was invited by Nkoka training to talk about the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, and parallels I drew to a home automation project I am running with 'system on chip' technology with sensors, and analytics at home. NKOKA is a Xitsonga word meaning Quality. I was so impressed by this SETA accredited education centre, owned by Rian Venter, an ex Denel expert on electronics & education, which did some of his courses in NASA in the 2000's. About 40 students are busy with a one-year course, the students are for Nkoka clients like SABC, MNET, Multichoice, Vodacom, MTN, CSIR and others.

After my presentation, the students introduced me to their projects, using a deep understanding of the fundamentals of electronics, using Raspberry Pi's, Arduino's, ESP8266's and lots more !  From movement triggered alarms for car boots, to tracking the grazing and heart rates of farm animals to determine the best feeding to maximise their growth, and many other very creative ideas. The students energy and vision impressed me só, and their respect for Rian Venter and his team, whom they call their 'mentors'.

It was a privilege to present my views of the future busy unfolding with IoT to these young South Africans, the implications on businesses, and society. I have A LOT OF HOPE for the country South Africa to see such drive and ownership for their education, as well as the passion from the educators.

Thank you Rian, the education team, and the students, for the morning I spent with you!
